Carolina has become synonymous with gaming hockey and the NHL draft. I don’t think you can go wrong with Patrick or Hischier here, but judging by how the Devils historically play hockey, and how much they value all-around talent, I believe Patrick will make a great addition to a diverse forward core of Hall, Palmieri, Henrique, Zacha, McLeod, and Anderson. He may need another year of seasoning with Windsor as they likely make another run at a Memorial Cup, but he will be an NHL centre sooner rather than later in my opinion. Luv u all. Highly involved on a powerhouse squad. Smith could be one of the biggest steals of the draft. His U18 was less than ideal and showcased the work that needs to be done in the defensive end, but his upside can’t be denied. For comparison, teammate Juuso Valimaki has a similar +38.2% increase in goals against at even strength, but his offensive boost is +43% which balances things out quite a bit. I really like the talent in this year’s draft, especially at the defense position. Salda is an overager, but his metrics look positive offensively. Woo has shown that he has another gear, he just needs to come back strong from a season full of injury. Someone like Tomas Hertl managed to double Necas’ INV% and just managed to sneak into the Top-20 in his draft. He played 15:31 in his game on Sunday. While the biggest pure skill pick at this number would likely be Kailer Yamamoto, and I considered putting him here, Suzuki is a fast and stable skater who can make the quick smart play, which is an NHL skillset. View Site Leaders Zacha’s underlying numbers should sound alarms about his seemingly encouraging season. names like Ho-Sang, Barzal, Beauvillier, and Bellows are all electrifying talends in their own ways, and I believe the Islanders will continue with that trend this season drafting Nick Suzuki from Owen Sound. His -8.44 ESGF%rel is the only negative number value I can find across all likely 1st round CHL/USHL picks, his 29%INV is less than ideal for a potential top centre pick, and his catalyst numbers that I outlined earlier here are  a +6.43% offensively, indicating a boost in even strength goals for per hour relative to his team, and a +42.5% defensively, representing an increase in even strength goals against per hour when he’s on the ice relative to his team. Zadina is not the 6th best player available, nor was Veleno the 30th. Addison was a clear 1st rounder to me, and Hållander was right there too. My “Would’ve Picked” list containing Dahlen, Fox, Berdin, Gregor, Raddysh, Bernhardt, Allard, and Ronning will be expanded for the names not called by Toronto in 2017, just so I can either pat myself on the back or kick myself down the line. His second half was absurd and Carolina is in need of some more firepower in their lineup. Thomas could be the steal of the draft, and Kupari has huge upside as a playmaker, especially as a PP quarterback. The NHL giveth, and the NHL take away. He’s an A+ puck carrier and distributor, and he’s been getting a difficult job done in one of the best leagues in Europe against men. It was expected that Kyle Palmieri would be traded. This week’s action is highlighted by Dawson Mercer’s return in the QMJHL, the USHL season getting underway for Ethan Edwards and Akira Schmid, and Arseni Gritsyuk and Shakir Mukhamadullin helping Russia capture the 2020 Karjala Cup in Finland. He also played in a Slovakian Cup game on Wednesday but I haven’t been able to find the stats for that. I can see Dallas going with a D like Heiskanen here, as they haven’t been shy about drafting from Finland lately, but my gut has me going with the skilled winger from Minnesota. Usually it is all men’s teams that compete but Russia decided to ice their U20 team against the other nation’s senior teams. Utunen is an interesting swing who produced well in a men’s league. He’s often put alongside younger players (Yeremei Shumilin, Alexander Perevalov, etc.) Wise and Nordgren were favourites of mine, Beaudin is a rock-solid pick, and Kurashev is remarkably skilled and has a ton of upside. Marian Studenic had an even rating, 34 PIM, and a shot in 8:15 in his only league game action last week against HC Kosice on Sunday. He’s a high octane offensive minded centre who may outscore Patrick in his career, but may not be as complete a player in all zones and scenarios. That being said, this was the year to land a top-class defender, and they reached on a fine C. I wasn’t a fan of their P-O Joseph pick last year, and they seemed to aim a bit low on a few of their picks. That puts him top in this group, and is absolutely not meaningless. The views on this blog and the public tracking doc were nearly double what it was last year, which is great news and further motivates me to build this into something even bigger. A fine draft. Many of these players will take well over a season to gain the skills necessary to even come close to an NHL spot, and the level of skill development necessary can be enormous. I was a fan, and at 72, I like the pick. An NHL career is made every single day of a young players life, and the path is never the same for any pair of picks. Do Not Love: Samuelsson at 32 and literally every pick past 100. Foudy’s got the speed, and was searing hot for the back half, but at 18? He managed 12 shots per hour, which put him 2nd among first year eligibles, beaten only by Jonah Gadjovich of the Owen Sound Attack. Worked for Matt Phillips, and they might have another smaller project on the way. Nick Merkley and Assat had last week off. Do Not Love: None. I still have a hard time leveling with the fact that the Flyers jumped 11 spots to pick 2nd overall. They just kept winning, but hockey can be a nasty sport. Shafigullin is a massive question mark but he just can’t seem to stop producing. I would’ve put up a fight for Nordgren or Wise at 63, or Chicago could just go ahead and land both. The KHL has tracking technology and it was recently noted that he has the hardest shot of the season at 168 kilometers per hour, which google tells me is roughly 104 miles per hour. Vegas doing what they did, the Capitals exorcising their demons, seeing the Jets and Predators finally become powerhouses, it was all fantastic to watch. He’s an interesting swing in the 7th round and I liked his elusiveness and tenacity at the World Juniors. Mercer had an assist, -1, 2 PIM, 2 shots, and won 5/9 faceoffs. I could see them going with Owen Tippett or Cale Makar here, but I see more out of Tolvanen’s game on a consistent basis that I like over Tippett, and Makar’s AJHL-only experience this year is somewhat of an issue for me. He didn’t have the greatest playoff or U18, but his effort all season long was exceptional, nearly touching 94 points and providing a +17.2 ESGF%rel. He played in two games, had an even rating, and a shot. I was higher on Khovanov than most, and while not the speediest, I found him intelligent with the puck and relatively elusive. Buffalo may have a wealth of forward prospects in the hopper at the moment, but Tolvanen is a goal scoring talent that really can’t be ignored. Suzuki is not a defensive liability, as ESGA/60 only increased by 4.16% when he was on the ice against the best opposing talent. Manukyan had an off year after a massive MHL season. McIsaac is an okay pick at 36, but he was far from ideal in my tracking sheet considering what was left. He is an exceptional playmaker who can make the more difficult play if it leads to a better scoring chance. Killinen is all upside and Sellgren is a good swing in the 6th round. They earned the patented Brown Skate Award in 2018. Denisenko is 100% upside. For reference, Nolan Patrick was a 51.4%, Hischier, and Vilardi were at 64%, and Mittelstadt finished with a 60%. Tippett falling to 12 was unexpected for me, but with how wide open this draft is, anything can happen. I just really don’t know about how Minnesota did, and I really am struggling to figure out their plan for the future. Recently Tampa has trended towards Canadian leagues for many of their top picks, and I believe this year will be no different. The Pittsburgh Penguins get the Bronze Roll of Tape Award as they had barely anything to do over the weekend and they still did extremely well with their picks. As a homegrown cynical Leafs fan, last year was questionable and frustrating for me. Real high intensity, heavy playing, and fearless throwback forward. As Henrik Sjoberg reported, Holtz was the top RW on a line with Lucas Raymond and Karl Henriksson and was on their top PP unit. 46 of the 217 weren’t tracked in my sheet, but a 78.8% rate of picks tracked ain’t bad. Janne Kuokkanen had an even rating and 7 shots while averaging 16:02 of ice time per game across 2 games last week. The team has since been isolated and tested. I am a huge fan of the current NHL lottery system as far as it’s ability to somewhat negate intentional tanking, and many readers may know that I’d advocate for making every pick between 1 and 15 a lottery to really shake things up. This season was one of the most fun I’ve had watching hockey in a very long time. The Rangers had a ton of picks, and I think they could’ve done better, but they did fine. The Leafs filled a desperate need for high potential defenders in one draft by going for solid value on Sandin, Durzi, Hollowell and Kral. Lindbom is another example of “great internationally, but not on his actual team”, so who knows where he ends up, but I almost always would argue against goaltenders before the 3rd round. I think it’s very possible Heiskanen will be gone by 7. Vegas was an incredible story on so many levels, and I can’t wait to see what they pull off this summer, let alone where they’re at in a year. I am not sure if there is another prospect as divisive as Tim Liljegren in the 2017 1st round. Wheeling and dealing is the name of the game. Once again, lots of this is likely to be wrong. You can be a defensive liability, but you have to be able to pull your weight offensively in order to make up for that difference. Starting on Monday? That’s the thing about sports, before things actually happen, everything is just opinion or speculation. If I get it right, it’s probably more to dumb luck. Daniil Misyul and Lokomotiv Yaroslavl had last week off. Solid speed, solid skill. Many have clamored for a good way to prevent teams from tanking, and I believe this year was a great example of what that means. He will get pucks up ice and through the neutral zone like very few others before him. He’s unbelievably smart on the ice and remarkably fluid on his feet. It seems the Sharks are no stranger to trying to handle individual personalities, and Merkley could be the steal of the draft in that sense. He’s a smart player who I believe has an NHL-level skillset to be a solid forward for the middle of your lineup. I really liked Kotkaniemi, but I wasn’t too sure if he were the #3 guy on the board. Huge winger that gets to the net and could be a solid depth guy with power. His ceiling is high, and his metrics are promising for a junior player looking to make the jump to the NHL in the future. The NHL draft has concluded and with 217 names called, the real work begins for everyone both drafted and undrafted. Alexander Ovechkin has finally won a Stanley Cup. This is a byproduct of the new system we all asked for. O’Reilly is a great one-on-one scorer, but needs to develop elsewhere. The Detroit Red Wings get the Silver Puck Award I also just made up for how much raw talent fell into their laps. Arseni Gritsyuk was a part of the Russia U20 team that won the Karjala Cup over men’s teams from Finland, Czech Republic, and Sweden. Chicoutimi, along with 7 other QMJHL teams, are scheduled to move into a bubble in Quebec City to play from November 17 to November 27. Not far back from there, however. Liljegren was sidelined with injury as well, but he still managed to get into 54 games this season across five teams. Ethan Edwards had an even rating and 4 shots in his USHL debut in Sioux City’s 5-1 loss to Tri-City on Saturday. Dawson Mercer and Chicoutimi finally returned to action last Tuesday with a 4-2 win over Rimouski. Arguably the best two way defender on paper available, and has one of the smoothest set of feet in the draft. With names like Olofsson, Gustafsson, Hillis and Wise still available, Groulx aims a bit low. The Sabres also have had Eichel, Reinhart, Mittelstadt and Nylander added to the crop, but a rebuild without nailing any 2nd day picks is a doomed rebuild, and that tradition is more likely to continue than not. It’s finally over. For every value pick like Dewar and Boudrias, they took a huge leap on Johansson and put their faith in McBain hitting his stride (literally) at college. His production in the SHL was still very good for a defender, and fighting off the after-effects of mononucleosis can take months if not years, let alone for an elite young athlete like Liljegren. I liked Morozov when I caught him. This year there was well over 40,000 games tracked across 500 players or so, and your support makes the data input and analytsis worth it. When will the Sabres learn? Every odd man rush, every breakout, every offensive zone cycle, it was all executed perfectly all season long. I always prefer fence-swinging, but not this kind. My limited viewing of Bernard left me a bit wanting, but his analytics look very solid for a 4th round pick. Berggren probably should’ve been a first rounder. (Ed. They return to play tomorrow against JYP. O’Reilly and Kivenmaki have all the upside in the world. The Wings mostly killed it through no fault of their own. Necas is a dynamic playmaking centre who can make his linemates better, and on a young Brno team, he managed to have a productive season. Eriksson could be a forceful power winger with great skill. Nathan Smith was a D+2 who didn’t break a point per game in the USHL, so they must really like what he brings to take him in the 3rd round. My interpretation of this draft is that the highest picks are the a better class than last season, with pretty solid depth through the middle of the 1st round with a ton of “riskier” high-upside players later on. Bokk is full of skill and speed and has come a long way in a year. Some folks are interchanging Andrei Svechnikov and Filip Zadina at the 2nd pick, but I’m convinced that there is a divide between the two in terms of NHL upside. There was no time on ice recorded for his team in their game on Wednesday. Though at 185, if you like him, I’m okay with it. Yegor Zaitsev and Dynamo Moscow had last week off. Love his mobility though, and was reliable at the World Junior. Tolvanen managed 2.1 primary points per hour, as well as a 35%INV with 66% of goals scored while he was on the ice at even strength got him a primary point. Bottom-six, two-way center who typically also acts as the main playmaker for his unit. It’s no secret to the five of you who read these that I’m very high on Elias Pettersson, and I believe the Canucks are in on the party as well. Fix-Wolansky jumped off my tracker, and I’m glad someone took a swing. Patrik Laine had a remarkable (if not likely unsustainable) rookie season and shows all the potential to be a lethal goal scorer for years, and Sami Niku has just come off a breakout season  in Finland scoring 27 points in 59 games for JYP. Marie’s Conor Timmins, and managed a primary point on a remarkable 34.5% of even strength goals while he was on the ice, putting him ahead of second place Nic Hague at 31.2%. Valimaki has a forward’s scoring instincts as he will sneak into goal scoring areas and set up for an accurate one-timer, especially on the power play. When the ultimate prize was on the line, the tank just seemed to be empty. The team that drafted Liam Kirk was bound to get brownie points. It’s just the reality of the job, and there are times where you will double down on something when you are proven wrong. Loved Berni on the stat page, and love his mobility, but he’s very raw and made some awful plays at the World Junior. This one could be huge for the Blackhawks. Where things may go wrong is when you look beyond the ice and look at the stat sheets. The big day is here. The tournament is played between Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic, and Russia. His ability to walk the line, move the puck in the offensive zone, and generate offense with his shooting is a valued skill at the next level. His skating is solid and explosive, and his possession ability is good. He can pass with the best of them, and I’m very curious at where his career leads him. You don’t want to draft on need, but Winnipeg seemed to lack a sense of mobility from the back end, and could use a dynamic, offensive minded player like Valimaki. I have no idea what any team is thinking, let alone all 15 lottery teams. His shot is solid, but he makes a living moving and carrying the puck. They'll be breaking down the top forwards, defense and goalies, and also giving you some sleepers to keep an eye on. This post is a quick reaction to the news. We’re still not convinced Jake Sanderson is the right player for the New Jersey Devils. Dobson and Wahlstrom could be massive pieces. The worst in that group, for reference, was Pierre-Olivier Joseph, who increased even strength goals against by 48.6% while he was on the ice. Mittelstadt has been ranked all over the place, but Dallas seems to really love high skill level and offensive ability. Reminds me of one Zach Fucale from times past. Between Svechnikov and Jeff Skinner, if Carolina can add a second reliable goaltender, get Scott Darling back on track, and add a bit more talent down the middle Carolina will finally look primed to become the contenders everyone has been hoping they could be for years. He played 11:38, 10:58, and 14:16 across the 3 games. We look to the 2018 draft. I’m definitely high on him at 60, and Winnipeg did very well. The Islanders got great value at most of their picks, especially in the 1st round. Really gutsy offensive defender. Cody Glass would make a great addition as well, but Valimaki seems to fit their style a little better, and their forward core is young and highly skilled already. Well that lottery sure was interesting. Each ranker has their own system and have their own reasonings and analyis. The 2019 sheet has been created and is ready to be populated once the Russian seasons begin play in August. Love: Blake McLaughlin at 79, Lukas Dostal at 85, Jack Perbix at 116. Liked him the more I saw him. Ranta and Weiss weren’t super high on my list, but who knows? Gruden really flew under the radar with the NTDP, and I really like what he brings in terms of offensive versatility. He has good size at 6’2″ but his biggest asset is his shot and skating ability. He was a defensive black hole on a bad defensive team, but there is a solid profile there. Vegas needs a cornerstone, and while he had an off year, I believe the underlying talent is still there. Hockey East is hoping to start on November 20. Perunovich led his team in scoring, but is likely to regress a bit due to his shooting percentage. Mittelstadt is one of the most exciting speedy wingers in this draft, and has a very high ceiling as a potential top line scoring forward in the NHL. Outside of Dahlin, you’re unlikely to steal some value.. Roman has upside and flew under the radar at times. Super active, aggressive.. he just continues to get better and better on PK and in defensive parts and I love it. Pettersson may be one of the most underrated players in the draft, and if he can learn to play a more dynamic game at various speeds, he could be a lethal centre in the NHL in a short period of time. Cole Brady and Arizona State are scheduled to start their season on Saturday against Michigan. I would like to see better high/medium danger chances, as just 16.4% of his shots came from those areas, but his 15.6% shooting percentage is remarkable, if not unsustainable, for someone with those kinds of shooting metrics. I’m okay with it, even if I would personally expand it to 5, 10 or even all 15 picks to really discourage tanking, but this is definitely a step in the right direction. Buffalo’s defense core was abysmal this season, and I’m not completely sold on the idea of putting anyone in a top line role from the get go, let alone puck carrying defensemen, but I have little doubt that Dahlin will be a #1 in Buffalo before too long. Prosvetov and Tendeck are complete wild cards. Karlsson flew under the radar all year and I love that the Sharks took a huge swing on him. I’m a huge fan of Heiskanen, and he’s in my Top-5, but the draft is a strange animal. The Islanders may have done very well with their plethora of picks, but for the hand Pittsburgh was dealt, they landed two players that could’ve been 1st rounders in the late 2nd, and one of the best overagers available in Justin Almeida. Pettersson was almost a point per game, registering >3 points per hour, on a team that scored just 2.5 goals per game. He is currently tied for the lead on the team in goals with 4 and is 4th on the team in scoring with 9 points. Makar is an excellent skater with great vision and passing ability. His U18 left quite a bit to be desired, but his international tests otherwise have been solid for a potential top pick. This evening, the New Jersey Devils traded both to the New York Islanders for a package featuring the Islanders’ first round pick in 2021. With that being said, I’ve collected all of the players in my previous numberical ranking found here and split them into tiers based on where they may go.
