“When we’re doing things that we can do with our eyes closed, we’re not learning,” says the mom of two, who has had to adjust to life as a singleton after she and her husband of 17 years, Lloyd Exeter, decided to separate in 2018. When Ien got to the downtown Toronto campus of what is now Ryerson University to study Radio and Television Arts, she was one of a handful of Black students in her class, and shared a locker – and developed a deep friendship with – CBC Toronto news anchor Dwight Drummond.
